About King Panic

Ernest Becker quotes Sylvia Plath as saying that somewhere she names God as “King Panic”, and that Panic is fittingly King of the Grotesque.

In the beginning it was Elaine drumming, and John singing. Keith wandered past and was captured, imprisoned and made to learn, and then play, the guitar. Luckily he was a fast learner. Luckier still his friend Nick was already a bass player.

We play what music we write: rock, alt-folk, sometimes a bit jazz swampy, sometimes a bit raucous arthouse shit – left-field? Maybe. Iconoclastic? In our dreams. Sometimes we also play the songs of other people that we really like.

Anhedonia #5

Anhedonia #5 is our second release. Recorded during the same sessions as the first EP, but taking a deviating route: explores the genius that was John McAfee, sweats it out in nihilistic future scenario planning; updates the twin paradox; gets all existential for a bit and then juggles domesticity, violence and abuse all wrapped in the metaphor of the circus. Not all tracks have an elephant.

Reviews

The four guitars and drums of King Panic are much more than another loud band.

Yes they do the traditional shouty vocals, hammering guitars and drum kit loud thing as well as anybody we’ve heard lately, but also they give us some delicious harmonies, a number that could be from Dreaming Spires’ Americana songbook, and lyrics that could have been written by Leonard Cohen.

They and William the Conquer are from the same gene pool of post-rock excellence.

[Anhedonia #3] all fits together ... in the blue fantasy city of its cover art. Two knockout moments are God Made You Dirty and Salvador. The former opens the EP with wistfulness and a huge rocking chorus. It all cuts off mid-bar as if in anger.

Salvador is not the waltzing dream it first seems and spills out into angst and heartbreak, best captured by the twin piano/guitar melodies near the end. Some real lyrical gems can be found on Anhedonia
#3... wrathful pictures of unease.
